Beatrix Potter unsurprisingly had many animal friends, but her favourites were her pet rabbits. Benjamin Bouncer, or Bounce, always went on holiday with Beatrix’s family, travelling in a little basket. He liked picking and eating gooseberries from bushes. He also had a great fondness for buttered toast and would come running when he heard the tea bell.
This story was originally intended as one of three concertina books, a format Frederick Warne & Co. had devised for very young children. Unfortunately, they fared badly in shops as were often damaged by customers unfolding them and awkwardly attempting to get them back into their envelopes. In 1916 The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit and The Story of Miss Moppet were reformatted as conventional books.
