Beatrix Potter wrote The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse whilst living and working at Castle Cottage Farm following the demand from her publishers to write a full story to boost their income under the shadow of war shortages. Its creation was an ‘awful scramble’ for the author who fitted it in around her farming responsibilities.
The illustration of Johnny Town-Mouse was based on Potter’s husband’s friend Dr. Parson. Johnny Town-Mouse is depicted on the front cover carrying a bag of golf clubs as the two men had a private golf-course built.
